NDC sets Taiwan's 2018 GDP growth target at 2.4% to 2.6%

2017/11/30

Taipei, Nov. 30 (CNA) The government has set a target of between 2.4 percent and 2.6 percent for Taiwan's 2018 gross domestic product (GDP) growth and is aiming for an unemployment rate of no more than 3.8 percent, National Development Council (NDC) Minister Chen Mei-ling (陳美伶) said Thursday.

The NDC in January unveiled a four-year national development plan for 2017-2020, laying out the fundamental directions and guidelines for the implementation of government policy.

Starting next year, Chen said, the NDC will roll out one-year national development initiatives in line with the United Nations' sustainable development goals.

She said the NDC is targeting a 2.6 percent domestic economic growth for 2018, taking into account the situation at home and abroad and the government's economic stimulus measures.

However, if the downside risk factors are taken into consideration, the GDP growth target will be 2.4 percent, Chen said.

The NDC is also targeting an unemployment rate of between 3.7 percent and 3.8 percent for 2018, she said.

Earlier this month, the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics raised its 2018 growth forecast for Taiwan's GDP by 0.02 percentage points to 2.29 percent.
