Acer ranks No. 5 global PC vendor, Asustek No. 6 in Q2: Gartner

Taipei, July 12 (CNA) Acer Inc. and Asustek Computer Inc. were the fifth and sixth largest global PC suppliers, respectively, in the second quarter of this year, according to global market information advisory firm Gartner Inc.

In a research report dated July 11 on its website, Gartner said Acer replaced Asustek as the No. 5 PC supplier in the April-June period compared with the January-March period.

Data compiled by Gartner showed Acer shipped about 3.40 million PCs, down 14.4 percent from a year earlier, and took a 5.4 percent share of the global market, compared with a 6.4 percent share over the same period of last year.

Asustek saw its ranking fall one notch from the first quarter to sixth in the second quarter after its shipments fell 9.9 percent from a year earlier to 3.10 million units during the April-June period, representing a 4.9 percent share of the global market, down from 5.5 percent a year earlier, the data indicated.

In the second quarter of 2018, Acer's global market share stood at 6.4 percent, making it the fourth largest brand ahead of Apple Inc. However, in the second quarter of this year, Apple shipped 3.71 million PCs, down only 0.2 percent from a year earlier, to become the fourth largest brand.

Worldwide, PC shipments totaled 62.97 million in the second quarter, up 1.5 percent from a year earlier, Gartner said.

"Worldwide PC shipment growth was driven by demand from the Windows 10 refresh in the business market in the second quarter of 2019," Mikako Kitagawa, senior principal analyst at Gartner said in a statement.

"Desktop PC growth was strong, which offset a decline in mobile PC shipments," Kitagawa said.

In addition, the analyst said there were signs that the Intel central processing unit (CPU) shortage has eased to some extent. The shortage has had an ongoing impact on the market over the past 18 months, according to Gartner.

Gartner said trade friction between the United States and China has not affected the global PC market yet, but if Washington slaps up to 25 percent tariffs on an additional US$300 billion worth of Chinese goods, including PCs, the global PC market could feel the pinch from the move as product prices increase.

Shipments by China's Lenovo Group Ltd. for the second quarter rose 21.9 percent from a year earlier to 15.77 million units as the Chinese brand rushed to ship its products ahead of the possible next round of tariffs, Gartner said.

Lenovo took a 25.0 percent global market share, as the largest PC supplier in the second quarter, unchanged from the first quarter but up one notch from a year earlier, Gartner added.

U.S.-based HP Inc. came in second in the quarter after shipping 13.99 million PCs, up 22.0 percent from a year earlier, to account for 22.2 percent of global shipments and take the No. 2 position, the data showed.

Dell Inc. of the U.S. took third place on shipments of 10.65 million PCs in the second quarter, up 16.8 percent from a year earlier, accounting for 16.9 percent of global shipments, Gartner said.
