TSMC remains No. 3 IC supplier worldwide in Q1

2019/05/17

Taipei, May 17 (CNA) Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the world's largest contract chipmaker, remained the third largest integrated circuit supplier in the world in the first quarter of this year, according to market advisory firm IC Insights.

Data released by IC Insights on Thursday showed that TSMC posted US$7.096 billion in sales in the January-March period, down 16 percent from a year earlier in the wake of weaker global demand, but its ranking remained unchanged.

In the first quarter, U.S.-based semiconductor giant Intel Corp. overtook Samsung Electronics Co. of South Korea to become the world's largest IC supplier as the South Korean firm saw sales revenue plunge due to a tumble in the price of dynamic random access memory chips and NAND flash chips used in storage, IC Insights said.

Intel posted US$15.80 billion in sales in the first quarter, little changed from a year earlier, while Samsung's sales revenue fell 34 percent from the previous year to US$11.99 billion, the data showed.

SK Hynix Corp., another South Korean memory chip maker, suffered a 26 percent year-on-year decline in sales revenue which totaled US$5.90 billion to remain the fourth largest IC supplier in the world, the data indicated.

Micron Technology Inc., a DRAM maker in the United States took fifth place in the first quarter after posting US$5.48 billion in sales, down 27 percent from a year earlier.

Broadcom Inc., an American chip supplier, came in sixth with sales totaling US$3.94 billion in the first quarter, down 4 percent from a year earlier, ahead of U.S. rival Qualcomm Inc. (US$3.72 billion, down 4 percent), Texas Instruments Inc., another American supplier (US$3.20 billion, down 4 percent), Japan's Toshiba/Toshiba Memory (US$2.36 billion, down 31 percent), and Infineon Technologies of Germany (US$1.35 billion, down 1 percent), IC Insights said.

HiSilicon, the semiconductor manufacturing arm of China-based telecom equipment maker Huawei Technologies, registered the highest growth of 41 percent in sales among the top 15 IC makers in the first quarter, the data showed. The data indicated HiSilicon posted US$1.76 billion in sales revenue in the first quarter to take 14th place, up from 25th a year earlier.

IC Insights said sales revenue posted by the top 15 suppliers fell 16 percent from a year earlier to US$68.47 billion in the first quarter.
