Taipei, May 2 (CNA) Taiwan is ranked the third-best destination for investment
in the latest U.S. Business Environment Risk Intelligence (BERI) report, up one
notch from a year earlier, the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) cited the
report as saying on Monday.
In the report, Taiwan received a total score of 62 points for profit opportunity recommendation (POR) -- the overall indicator used by BERI to evaluate each country as an investment destination -- up from 60 in the third valuation of 2021 BERI conducted in December 2021.
BEIR releases evaluation reports three times a year, in April, August and December, checking the investment environment in 50 countries around the world from the perspective of multinational companies, according to the MOEA.
The American institution uses three main indicators to assess investment risk -- operating conditions (operation risk), political risk and foreign exchange/external accounts position (remittance and repatriation factor) risk, the MOEA said.
BERI largely uses surveys undertaken among multinational enterprises and takes into account economic data from the 50 countries in its evaluations, the ministry added.
In the April BERI report, Taiwan's total score was tied with South Korea, with the two countries trailing only Switzerland (70) and Norway (67). Taiwan and South Korea were ranked the best investment destinations in Asia.
Elsewhere in Asia, Singapore took the sixth spot worldwide with a score of 58, tied with China, ahead of Japan (No. 13; score: 55), according to the MOEA.
In terms of the POR factor, Taiwan scored 65 in operation risks, the third highest, up one notch from the latest report and trailing only the United States (69), the MOEA said.
In terms of political risk, Taiwan ranked 24th in the world, up four notches from the last report, with its score rising from 38 to 42 in the latest report, the MOEA added.
According to the MOEA, Taiwan scored 80 in the remittance and repatriation risk category, unchanged from the last report and remaining the highest in the world.
Taiwan took first spot in accumulated international reserves, foreign exchange generation and foreign debt assessment in the remittance and repatriation risk category, the MOEA said.
