Sales in computer, information service industry hit new high in 2021

Taipei, April 9 (CNA) Sales generated by the computer and information service industry in Taiwan hit a new high of more than NT$450 billion (US$15.57 billion) in 2021, at a time when the stay-at-home economy boomed amid COVID-19, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA).

Data compiled by the Department of Statistics under the MOEA showed revenue posted by the industry totaled NT$453.4 billion in 2021, up 12.4 percent from a year earlier. The growth was the highest since 2008, the data indicated.

With growing demand for emerging technologies such as 5G applications, high performance computing devices, gadgets related to the Internet of Things and cloud technology-based data processing, many enterprises have been keen to use more hardware and software to ensure cybersecurity, the MOEA said.

On the back of the rising popularity of information system services in the business sector, such as package software, the ministry added, revenue posted by the local computer and information service industry has increased annually, from NT$272.5 billion in 2012 to a record high NT$453.4 billion in 2021.

From 2012-2021, the compound annual growth rate for sales in the industry hit 5.7 percent, according to the MOEA.

In 2021, computer programming design, consulting and related services served as the major sales growth driver in the industry, with revenue reaching a new high of NT$341.4 billion, up 11.8 percent from a year earlier, according to the ministry, adding that growth resulted from an increase in demand from enterprises to build storage networks and enhance information protection.

The MOEA added that the information service segment posted NT$112.0 billion in revenue, also a record high, in 2021, up 14.1 percent from a year earlier, largely due to intensive promotions by online auction site operators and social media owners.

In 2021, the computer and information service industry spent NT$13 billion in research and development, up 10.8 percent from a year earlier, with spending on related personnel hitting NT$10.4 billion, accounting for almost 80 percent of the total R&D spending, the MOEA said.

The MOEA said the number of employees in the computer and information service industry rose 3.0 percent from a year earlier to 119,000 in 2021, beating the average 0.1 percent decline suffered in the service sector as a whole.

The workforce in the computer and information service industry first topped 100,000 in 2018, the MOEA added.

In addition, the average regular wage in the industry rose 3.5 percent from a year earlier to NT$69,000 in 2021, beating the average of NT$45,000 for the whole service industry, according to the MOEA.
