Taipei, March 22 (CNA) President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) on Wednesday praised the 2022 production value of Taiwan's bicycle industry and celebrated the industry for exceeding 1 million units in electric bicycles exports.

Tsai made the comments during the opening of the 2023 Taipei Cycle and TaiSPO show, an annual Taiwan exhibition for the local bicycle and sports and fitness industries organized by the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA).

In her speech, Tsai praised Taiwan as an important manufacturing as well as a research and development hub for the global bicycle industry, with over 1,000 companies clustered in Taichung, Changhua and Nantou.

Tsai said the production value of Taiwan's bicycle industry in 2022 was over NT$200 billion (US$6.6 billion), a 23 percent increase from 2021.

Tsai also stated that the export of Taiwan-made E-bikes exceeded 1 million units in 2022.

In addition, seeing sportsmen and women around the world using domestically manufactured products is something that fills her with "great pride," Tsai said.

The TAITRA-organized annual expo is being held from Wednesday to Saturday and features 1,023 companies with 3,850 booths in hall 1 and 2 at Nangang Exhibition Center.

TAITRA revealed that over 4,000 buyers from 90 countries preregistered to visit the expo.

The council added that the event is the first expo held in the country to welcome visitors from abroad since the COVID-19 pandemic.

TAITRA Chairman James Huang (黃志芳) on Wednesday said the expo is the biggest bicycle industry trade show in Asia and will likely bring in a lot of business opportunities this year.
